"It isn't as though I've seen you before...not really. Just an idea in my head. I have heard the song and seen the picture before. But not with my eyes," Amy replied to Mike's puzzled look.
She slowly walked over to him and put her hand on his chest. He watched her hand as it laid upon him. She closed her eyes and let out a soft moan of pain. Mike closed his eyes, too, and laid his head back on the chair.
Amy straightened. "I can feel the ache. It is what I have been feeling for years. The deep unhappiness...the longing. I don't understand."
Mike rose from the chair and walked slowly around her. He studied every curve of her face; breathed in the scent of her. Something stirred in him and he heard Amy gasp. She put a hand on her heart and a pained look came over her. There was a jolt that went through him and it was as if his heart began to beat again for the first time. He did not know why but he wanted to hold her to him.
She opened her eyes and turned to stare into his. What was this? It penetrated layers of walls. It shot so deep. The warmth hurt like a frozen limb feeling heat again...regaining blood circulation. She wanted to run in fright...but there was an invisible cord holding her there. She couldn't move. She could barely breathe.
Once the last chord from Mike's guitar floated off, Amy felt able to move again. She rose from her seat and moved slowly toward the room behind the stage.
The walls of this room were covered with prose and poems that others had posted, interspersed with watercolors and pastel drawings. There was one pastel that caught Amy's attention. She had see it before in her mind. Below it was the words to the song that Mike had just sang.
She turned abruptly to see Mike standing in the doorway staring at her with a puzzled look on his face. Amy felt something similar to a jolt of static electricity move throughout her body.
"I have seen you before, but..." Mike hesitated, searching for words that would make sense. "I saw you at the same table, wearing that same sundress, wiping a tear from your face as I finished singing that song I sang tonight. But this is the first time I sang here and the first time I sang that song." He looked so confused and embarrassed.
Amy watched as Mike slowly moved sideways into the room and slumped into an over stuffed chair in the corner. His eyes never left her. His face had gone white as if he was seeing a ghost.
As the fog of the morning lifts And the curtain of sleep opens The cold of reality seeps through It was only a dream in the night There is no body of yours Lying entangled with me in sheets That are not soiled by love The throbbing between my legs Was left by no more than a hope My desire to share a life That should have been fully grown Torn away by pride and pain Misunderstanding and youthful distrust The bridge was seemingly burned Rebuilt by longing and destiny Carrying your scent, your warmth Your doubts, your fears, your love Sweeping me up in its draft Cradling me in its promises Knowing you will hold me forever Filling my every space and thot Giving me unconditional love endlessly And I sigh, I breathe you in Longing to lay in your arms forever
And there you were in front of me waiting with arms opened wide knowing that's where I belonged never having really left me alone whispering my name to guide me home and all the agony of years between released its hold on me instantly I sighed a sigh of contentment for you held my heart all this time not a bruise, nothing damaged it was always with you it has always belonged with you and for the first time in forever I can see my future in your eyes I can feel my heartbeat with you tears of emotion over flow onto you you kiss them away and I melt this is where I've always belonged
